Police intevene, solve truckers’ row

A tussle between truck owners of Colvale in Bardez taluka and truck owners from Torsem in Pernem taluka, over sharing business of transportation at a hotmix plant at Torxem in Pernem, was successfully solved by the intervention of the police.
Trouble started recently when some trucks from Torxem and other parts of Pernem taluka, after the closure of mining, were engaged at the plant. Over the last 15 years, mostly trucks from Colvale and surrounding areas were engaged at the plant. Pernem truckers, strongly opposed to the engagement of the trucks from Colvale at this plant, stopped the Colvale trucks from entering the plant. In retaliation, the Colvale truckers stopped the Torsem truckers at Colvale on February 16.
Later, truck owners from both the talukas met chief minister Manohar Parrikar seeking his intervention to resolve the problem.
As per directions of the chief minister, Mapusa DySP Serafin Dias and Pernem PI Tushar Lotlikar held a meeting with both the factions at the Pernem police station on Saturday.
During the meeting it was decided that only 129 trucks which were engaged at the plant initially will continue to operate at the plant. It was also decided that if new trucks have to enter the trade, then it would be done after discussions at a meeting of all the truckers. [TOI]
