Police yet to solve mystery of ‘Mahanand phobia’
While the police are claiming that investigation into the harassing calls made by serial killer Mahanand Naik to the lone surviving victim is midway, the owner of SIM card number from which calls and messages were sent to the girl has reportedly moved out of Goa.
Mapusa-resident Wilfred Rodrigues, owner of SIM card number 8806482656 is said to be in Hyderabad. “We are waiting for his return to Goa so that we can question him,” an officer said.
Herald had first reported that Mahanand was making frequent calls and sending messages to his victim from the Vodafone number, ironically from the Central Jail Aguada where he is currently lodged.
Herald’s independent inquiry revealed that the SIM number belongs to Wilfred and that it has been switched off after the exposé. While two police stations – Ponda and Calangute are investigating the complaint, Prisons department has begun inspecting jails and inmates for banned articles.
North Goa Superintendent of Police Vijay Singh, when contacted, said the investigation is still underway. “We are collecting information. Our investigation is not yet complete,” he said refusing to divulge details.
The investigating teams have recorded statements of the victim on Monday. She stood by her claims that Mahanand harassed her through calls and messages. Mahanand, on the other hand, has denied allegations.
The police will also look into how the cell phone was smuggled inside the jail premises. For this, the presence of Wilfred is crucial. [H]
