Ponda hospital to be opened on CM’s birthday

The long delayed shifting of equipment from Ponda's old infectious diseases (ID) hospital to the new building will commence next week.

The hospital is likely to be inaugurated on chief minister Manohar Parrikar birthday, December 13.

Speaking to TOI, health minister Laxmikant Parsekar said, "We have decided to inaugurate the new ID hospital at Ponda on December 13."

Work on the 220-bed Ponda hospital had commenced in 2007 and construction was scheduled to be completed by 2009.

The Ponda sub-district hospital will have six operation theaters and will be manned by around 20 doctors and 35 nurses.

"Initially we will start the hospital with 60 beds and a few operation theaters. As per the requirements we will expand the hospital's facilities," Parsekar said.

The government has also decided to transfer temporary class IV staff from Goa medical college and hospital (GMC) to the Ponda hospital and regularize their services.

The government has also planned to start the hospital at Sanquelim as it is a link between Sattari and Bicholim talukas.

The government is also in the process of recruiting around 150 doctors to run newly-constructed hospitals at Bicholim, Ponda, Valpoi and Sanquelim.  [TOI]
