Ponda’s roads claimed a life every eight days in 2012

 

With an accident occurring every 25 hours on an average, Ponda's roads have claimed a life every eight days in 2012. Ponda police station has registered 41 deaths on roads with 165 people injured in 360 road accident cases between January and December, 2012.

In the 360 accident cases registered by Ponda police during the calendar year, it has left 37 men and four women dead and 118 men and 47 women injured. Among the 37 men who died, 24 were in their most productive age range of 15 to 44 years. Thirteen were in the age group of 15 and 29 years and 11 were in the age range of 30 to 44 years. Nine were between 45 and 59 years and four were senior citizens who had crossed 60 years. Among the four women who died, there was a woman in all age groups, except 45 to 59 years of age. Police sources added that this figure was about only major and reported accidents. But, the number of accidents could be much more as many cases go unreported in cases of minor crashes and injuries. [TOI]
