Ponda saw 45 suicides in 2012

Breaking all its past records, 46 people in Ponda chose death over life in 2012, with a rise of about 20% in cases as compared to its corresponding statistic in 2011.

This is also the highest suicide rate in the past six years. Ponda police had registered 39 cases of suicide in 2011 which has risen to 46 in 2012. On an average, four persons have committed suicide per month in 2012. It means one person commits suicide every eight days.

The police had registered 42 cases of suicides in 2010, which was the highest in five years from 2007 to 2011. It was followed by 39 cases in 2008 and 38 cases in 2009. In 2007, police had registered 37 cases of suicides.

It was an issue of great concern that 2012 witnessed a fourfold rise in suicides by senior citizens in Ponda, with housewives in the lead, who contributed exactly 50 percent to the cases of women who killed themselves. In 2011, no female senior citizen had committed suicide. While among eight women, the remaining were in the age group of 30 to 44 years.[TOI]
