The possibility of twin Shigmo celebrations in Ponda has gained further momentum, with the Ponda Taluka Antruz Shigmotsav Samiti seeking request to stage the Shigmo parade on March 26, two days ahead of the Shigmo parade which has been booked by a new committee of MGP supporters.
“The State government has reserved March 27 and 28 to hold the Shigmo parade. I am aware that Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) has received an application from Ponda Taluka Antruz Shigmotsav Samitti seeking request to stage the Shigmo parade on March 26. We are yet to decide on the application,” PMC Administrator Narayan Navti told Herald.
It may be recalled that since the last several years, Ponda Taluka Antruz Shigmotsav Samitti has been organising the Shigmostav parade in Ponda city. However, the newly formed Antruz Mahal Shigmotsav Samitti since last year took over organisation of the festival. After a gap of one year, Ponda Taluka Antruz Shigmotsav Samitti has too decided to hold Shigmo parade claiming they are the original organisers of the event.
Sources informed that for the first time, Ponda will witness two Shigmotsav float parades organised by two different groups. Ponda Taluka Antruz Shigmotsav Samitti is headed by former chief minister Ravi Naik and Antruz Mahal Shigmotsav Samitti is headed by Ponda MLA Lavoo Mamledar.
It is learnt that the group led by Mamledar will organise the event in association with the Tourism Department.
“Ponda Taluka Antruz Shigmotsav Samitti has been organising the festival in Ponda city since the last 33 years and such kind of problem over organising the festival has been purposely created by some politicians with vested interest,” alleged Ponda Taluka Antruz Shigmotsav Samitti Secretary Damu Naik.
“Last year, due to the tragic bus accident at Calvim-Aldona we decided not to hold the Shigmo parade. However, later the Tourism Department in association with other group organised the float parade,” stated Naik.
However, confusion still prevailed over the Shigmo float parade dates as Ponda Taluka Antruz Shigmotsav Samitti is yet to get consent, while Antruz Mahal Shigmotsav Samitti headed by MLA Mamledar is not keen to hold Shigmo parade on March 28, being Maundy Thursday. [H]
