Ponda verifies number of women voters
Following instructions from the Ponda Electoral registration officer (ERO) and deputy collector, several village panchayats across Ponda taluka conducted special gram sabhas on Sunday to verify the number of women electors residing in their panchayat areas.
Sources said the recent census has shown the male-female sex ratio in Ponda taluka as 930 women against every 1,000 men while in Goa, the ratio is 960.
The electoral rolls of four assembly constituencies in Ponda taluka have shown the number of women voters outnumbering men. Ponda ERO Johnson Fernandes had asked the Ponda block development officer (BDO) to convene special gram sabhas to verify the number of women electors in four assembly constituencies in the taluka.
Ponda taluka has 19 village panchayats, however, only 18 village panchayats comprise four assembly constituencies including Ponda, Priol, Marcaim and Shiroda.
Although the 19th, Usgao-Ganjem panchayat, comes under Ponda taluka for revenue purpose, it is a part of Valpoi assembly constituency and the Valpoi ERO is concerned about its electoral business.
Ponda BDO Shashank Thakur said almost all village panchayats have conducted special gram sabhas on Sunday and verified the list of women electors.
"It could be due to some villages having more women voters; meaning there are more women above 18 years," Thakur told TOI.
Thakur said he had not received reports of the gram sabhas, adding that he is holding additional charge as Ponda BDO and is available at its office on certain weekdays. [TOI]
