Poor float response but Tourism dept optimistic

Though the Department of Tourism is getting poor response from Carnival float participants from the respective five cities that include Ponda, Margao, Panaji, Mapusa and Vasco, it is optimistic of meeting the mark of 100 participants.
So far the Department of Tourism’s Panaji office has received barely 50 applications. Although the response seems to be poor, officials in the tourism department said they are over optimistic that the participant numbers will swell and cross the 100 mark, usually on the last day when the rush starts, DoT sources said.
Goa which is the only state in India to celebrate the Carnival on a high-profile note is expecting to see over 120 floats comprising of various themes and traditional cultures, parading the entire Carnival route in wonderfully vibrant costumes.
The high cost of materials has made some participants to scratch their heads. The St Thomas Sports Club, Santa Cruz, has thought of parading a colourful fighter cock on the entire Carnival route.
"Unlike last years, this time we had to shell out most of the cost from our own kitty," the St Thomas boys told ‘The Navhind Times’, while shaping the bird, on Wednesday evening.[NT]
