Popular Front bike rally gets a thumbs down
In an interesting development, the South Goa District Magistrate, N D Agrawal, on Saturday rejected the request from the Popular Front of India to hold a bike rally in and around Margao city on Sunday.
The District Magistrate rejected the permission on grounds that the rally would lead to breach of peace in the city. He said the order of rejection was communicated to the Popular Front of India Goa unit President Syed Iftiyaz and it was based on the report from the police.
Iftiyaz, when contacted, expressed his shock and surprise over the rejection of permission by the magistrate to hold the bike rally in Margao. “Initially, the District Magistrate delayed the matter under one pretext or the other and finally turned down our request for permission to take out the rally,” he added.
The Popular Front of India, Goa had decided to celebrate “Popular Front Day” at Margao and Ponda on Sunday. In Margao, the Front had planned flag hoisting at its head office at Chandrawaddo at 9 am followed by a bike rally in and around Margao. They had also planned to distribute sweets and fruits in orphanages, hospitals and old-age homes in the city as part of the celebration.
Similar programs have been planned in Ponda in the morning followed by a public meeting at 3.30 pm near Naga Masjid open space. [H]
