Power dept attitude concerns GOACAN

Panjim: Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network (GOACAN) has expressed deep concern over the careless attitude of the Electricity Department in managing its financial matters and redressal of consumer grievances. The reaction comes after the Electricity Department issued an advertisement in various newspapers on Saturday seeking to clarify the issue of Fuel and Power Purchase Cost Adjustment Formula (FPPCA) where it has to recover amounts from the consumers. GOACAN Coordinator Roland Martins has asked the senior officials that the time has come for self criticism and introspection while also slamming the department for blaming the media.“The department has regularly failed to inform the power consumers procedures being followed wherein sometimes charges are debited or credited to consumers. Instead it has sought to blame the media for “highlighting in bold letters in case of recovery cases and never highlighting credit cases which happened in the last quarter itself” as mentioned in the advertisement dated November 11,” he said.
Moreover, he said, every opportunity available to the Electricity Department to reach out to its consumers has been lost due to the careless attitude of its senior officials. He cited that in the recent North Goa District Consumer Protection Council meeting headed by North Goa Collector Nila Mohanan, the attendees took serious note of the absence of electricity officials. “Although the office of the Chief Electrical Engineer (CEE) is a building across the road from the Collectorate, they sent a representative only after their absence came in for serious criticism from the consumer forums present at the meeting,” Martins said.Even in the recent cases of deaths of human beings and cattle due to electrocution which have been reported in the media, the department has failed to provide an explanation, resulting in further damage to its credibility as an efficient and reliable service provider.“A study of the complaints reported on their Helpline 1912 would clearly show that the department has failed in tackling the perennial problems of power cuts faced by consumers in different Villages and Towns of Goa. The field data collected by the consumer forums and the interactions with the electricity department employees have shown that the senior officials have failed to respond to the ground reality,” he further said.
