Power failure dampens festive mood in some parts of Goa

The repeated outages due to frequent tripping of the Northern grid line feeding power from Kolhapur to Colvale sub-station led to disruption of power in Bardez and Tiswadi and some parts of Salcete for considerably long times on Tuesday and dampened the Diwali celebrations in the areas.

The power breakdowns played spoilsport in celebration of Laxmi Pooja in the evening hours. While some performed the pooja without lights others preferred to wait till the supply was restored.
The power outages that began around 4.30 p.m. and continued till 6.30 p.m. when the power department official managed to rectify the fault that was causing breakdown of the power supply from the grid.
The chief electrical engineer, Mr Nirmal Braganza told The Navhind Times that the Northern grid line from Kolhapur to 400 kV sub-station at Colvale began tripping due to overdrawing of power. The overdrawing of power could have been in view of festival of lights being celebrated throughout the country.
He said that the staff of the power grid managed to identify the fault and the power supply was restored later in the evening. He also said that power to other places of the state was supplied from the Southern grid.
Margao and its outskirts also witnessed power failure on the day of Diwali. At several places, shopkeepers, who had come for pooja of goddess Laxmi, had to put up with darkness as power supply tripped on and off. The repeated power failure, especially when puja was being officiated, angered the people. [NT]
