Probe into Barcem deaths hits roadblock

The magisterial inquiry into the death of a mother and her two children at Barcem village has hit a road block thanks to the Quepem Sub-divisional Magistrate holding additional charge as Margao municipal chief officer. At first, the inquiry into the death of the trio was held up on account of the delay by the Cuncolim police to submit the names of persons to be interrogated in connection with the tragic incident. Sources in the know said that when the police finally submitted the names of six persons who could throw light on the incident, the SDM, Quepem, Sandhya Kamat, could not record their statements as she was preoccupied with the Margao municipal meeting. “I had issued notices to the six Barcem villagers to offer their help and assistance to take the inquiry to its logical conclusion. However, on the day of recording of statements, I was pre-occupied with the council meeting at Margao”, she told Herald. Incidentally, the inquiry into the death of the mother and two children has not made any headway so far since the Quepem SDM was given the additional charge of Margao Municipal Council. On the other hand, Margao municipal city fathers are clamouring for a full-fledged chief officer on grounds that the incumbent officer is holding additional charge as Quepem Sub-Divisional Magistrate.
