In a daring incident that occurred near Bethora in Ponda on Saturday morning, a young police sub-inspector (PSI) of the Goa police, Abhishek S P Gomes, attached to the Ponda traffic cell, was killed after he was run over by a truck bearing Punjab registration number.
The Ponda police have arrested the truck driver, who had initially fled from the scene of crime after abandoning the truck. He was arrested after he descended from a hillock at Dhavli to make a phone call. Police have registered a case of murder under Section 302 along with Sections 279, 332 of the Indian Penal Code for rash and negligent driving and deterring a public servant from performing his duty against the Punjab-based truck driver.
According to information received from the police, the incident occurred at around 7.30 am. Police said that the deceased, aged 30, and a resident of Margao, while on duty noticed a speeding truck bearing registration number PB-13-Q-6115 and ordered it to stop at the Curti junction. Ignoring the order, the driver, Amarjeet Singh, 23, proceeded further with the truck thus raising doubt about his behaviour. The PSI chased the truck on his official motorcycle, overtook it and stopped in front of the truck blocking its way near the Bethora junction. However, the truck driver did not stop his vehicle and ran the truck over the PSI dragging him along with his motorcycle
for some metres.
Police further said that the PSI was rushed to the Ponda hospital with the assistance of the gathered locals. Injuries being severe, he was immediately shifted to the Goa Medical College and Hospital at Bambolim. However, the PSI breathed his last on way to the GMC, said Ponda police inspector, Mr C L Patil, who is investigating the case.
Reacting to the incident, the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar said that it was a case of murder and, therefore, the police have been asked to register the case under Section 302 of IPC.
The police inspector, traffic, Ponda, Mr Probodh Shirvoikar said that the deceased had been working at the Ponda traffic cell since the last five months and performing his duty meticulously. The body of the PSI was brought at his Margao residence in the evening after conducting the post mortem. Relatives, senior police officials, batchmates and friends visited the residence to express their sympathies with the family of the PSI. [NT]
