Quepem municipal council to construct building for fish market

After dropping its earlier plans to construct a multi-storied commercial building through Goa state infrastructure development corporation (GSIDC), the Quepem municipal council (QMC) has decided to take up another building project with its own funds to accommodate a fish market on the ground floor.
This was disclosed by QMC chairperson Dayesh Naik after commissioning a new garbage collection truck at the hands of Quepem MLA Chandrakant Babu Kavlekar recently.
Speaking to media persons, Naik said that the QMC will construct a new building at the site of the demolished municipal hall. He further said that the council will spend 55 lakh for this project from the municipal fund.
At the beginning of the monsoon season, QMC had demolished the old Quepem fish market to pave the way for the new commercial multi storied building. The council had also erected a temporary shed for the fish vendors.
Later, the GSIDC, in its letter dated August 1, 2012, stated that they could not go ahead with the construction work of the new commercial multistoried building at the fish market, as no 'encumbrance free' land was made available for the project.
Dayesh Naik stated that after completion of this building, the fish vendors will be shifted to the basement of this building as the ground floor will be kept completely open to accommodate fish vendors.
Speaking to media after inaugurating the garbage collecting truck, Babu Kavlekar said that he had requested the urban development minister to release grants from SUDA to carry out the construction work of the multi-storied building project at the place of existing fish market.
Kavlekar further said that he had taken up the issue of the junior engineer and chief officer attached to QMC with urban development minister. Both the officers have additional charges due to which citizens are facing difficulties to get their work done. Quepem, being a B-class municipality, does not have a full time chief officer and junior engineer. [TOI]
