Rehabilitate migrants, then demolish slums: Congress chief

State Congress president Subhash Shirodkar on Sunday stated that the state government should refrain from going ahead with the demolition plans of Moti Dongor slums unless the affected people are rehabilitated.
"In the larger context of humanity, they should be rehabilitated. Unless they are rehabilitated their houses should not be demolished," Shirodkar said, while interacting with journalists at Margao where he had come for a meeting organized by the minority cell of the Congress party.
South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha, when queried over the issue, however, was ambiguous in his reply. While he said that the government should act tough against illegal encroachers, he demanded that the government should "regularize" illegal structures wherever possible. "There are ways and means to regularize illegal structures," he said, but added in the same breath: "Please don't allow illegal constructions to come up anywhere. People who break laws should not be helped." [TOI]
