Resort employees launch hunger strike
Around 300 employees of Prestige Holiday (Royal Goan Resort) went on the warpath on Monday launching an indefinite hunger strike in the capital city, to protest the arbitrary termination of their services. The protestors have demanded immediate employment at the resort.
Speaking to media persons at Azad Maidan, member of Prestige Holiday (Royal Goan Resort) employees union Caitan DeMello alleged that a Portuguese national has been appointed managing director by the resort and it is he who has fired them and is employing foreign nationals without work Visas. “These facts have been made known to all the authorities including the government officials like Labour commission. However, till date no action has been initiated against the resort management,” he said.
The union will continue to protest till they are given back their jobs. He said that the employees engaged in sales, marketing and reception division of the resort, were working there since its inception. “Suddenly one Portuguese national Esperanca Particio, who newly joined as managing director of the resort, arbitrarily terminated the services of all 300 employees,” DeMello said.
DeMello demanded that all the 300 workforce who have lost their jobs be reinstated and the concerns of the company may be looked into and worked out in the best interest. [H]
