Revoke of licences, numbers to new houses: Mayem villagers
Unhappy over the growing presence of ‘outsiders’ in their village, residents of Mayem had demanded the revocation of licenses and house numbers given to several new houses constructed by non-Goans and those from outside the village.
The villagers made the demand at the Mayem Gram Sabha, when a villager, Ramesh Sawant, sought to know how many licences and house numbers were given to the ‘outsiders’.
“Most of these houses are occupied either by non-Goans or people not originally from the village and the panchayat has given house numbers to all these houses,” charged Sawant.
Another member stated that land from Mayem is being sold and people are constructing houses and trying to fence off the plots, after the announcement that the Mayem Custodian issue would be resolved and villagers would get their share of land.
The villagers also accused the panchayat secretary of an inordinate delay in replying to queries raised during the gram sabha.
The secretary informed that some documents from the panchayat were lost and the villagers demanded action against the then panchas for issuing NOCs to a mining company and also for misplacing the documents.
Deputy Sarpanch Narendra Mayekar, Panchas Suvarna Chodankar, Kishor Karbotkar, Urvi Masoorkar, Vijay Pole, Pandurang Gaonkar, Sneha Thanekar, Mahesh Ghadi and Narendra Tari were present at the meeting. [H]
