Romi Lipi panel against TSKK-XCHR merger move
Expressing surprise over attempts to merge the Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr (TSKK) with the Xavier Centre of Historical Research (XCHR), the Romi Lipi Action Front (RLAF) has denounced the move “to dismantle and kill TSKK, the 32-year-old institution founded to promote Konkani language.”
In a press note, the RLAF has stated that both Jesuit-managed institutions are independent Societies formed to achieve specific aims and objectives.
“The Jesuits provincial will have to issue an undertaking one week before the TSKK award function on January 26 that the TSKK will remain an independent institute serving the cause of Konknni language, failing which supporters of TSKK and lovers of Konkani will be forced to boycott the function,” warned RLAF Convenor Wilson Mazarello in the press note.
“TSKK was granted permanent recognition by Goa University as a Konkani Research Centre with an excellent library to help research and manned all these years by highly qualified and dedicated persons supervising and managing. Merging the TSKK with XCHR would literally destroy TSKK, which is the only well established Konkani research centre in the world,” Mazarello said.
Mazarello stated that TSKK was established with the primary help from the Society of Jesus, but has been maintained with the help from 500-odd benefactors, donors, and associates, who have become stakeholders in the institution.
“Therefore, it is not right for the superiors of Society of Jesus to take a decision to do away with TSKK. Those who have supported TSKK all these years will not stand by as mute spectators over a merger-proposal of TSKK with XCHR, and they will oppose such a move even to the extent of resorting to legal action,” state the press note.
When contacted, provincial of the Jesuits in Goa Fr Rosario Rocha said: “This is a matter generated by them and not by the Jesuits. [H]
