Rs 5 cr for creating awareness on waste management

Panjim: The State government has sanctioned Rs 5 crore to the newly formed Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) towards creating awareness programmes on segregation and treatment of waste at various levels, including educational institutions and to assist village panchayats in safe disposal of solid waste. “Sanction of the government is hereby conveyed to the Pattern of Assistance to incur annual expenditure of Rs 5 crore to Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC), towards implementation of the mandate of the Monitoring-cum-Working Committee,” Environment Director Parag Nagarcekar said in the notification.
GWMC, chaired by CM Manohar Parrikar, will monitor the enforcement programmes in terms of the Goa Non Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act, 1996 & Rules, 1997 and the Plastic Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2011.“The GWMC shall plan and implement programmes for creating awareness at all levels on segregation and solid waste management, awareness programmes for schools and other educational institutions and generating learning material in this regard,” the director said. “GWMC will assist village panchayats in the safe disposal of solid waste. They will also look into the aspects regarding the provisions of plastic waste… and suggest various measures for implementation and improvement in the legislation /rules,” he added. [H]
