Salgaocar rout Panchwadi, top South Goa play-off
Salgaocar FC Juniors thrashed Panchwadi SC 5-0 in the finals of GFA under-18 football league to emerge South Goa champions in the play-off finals played at Curtorim grounds on Wednesday.
Salgaocar lads now await the winners of Sporting Club de Goa and Dempo SC juniors clash in the grand finals to be played in North Goa.
Salgaocar played a cautious game in the initial stages but as the match wore on Panchawadi managed to contain the fast moving Salgaocar forwards.
The first half was played almost evenly, though it was Salgaocar who held the upper hand.
Once Salgaocar smelled blood, they were unstoppable as the floodgates opened up in the 33rd minute of play when Myron Fernandes found the mark with a neat shot.
The second session began with a bang for Salgaocar as Myron Fernandes and Stephen Fernandes combined superbly to score quick goals.
First it was Stephen (50th minute) who beat the rival keeper with a low effort off a pass from Myron and then Myron himself scored another gem of a goal in the 65th minute to complete his brace for the day.
Salgaocar then began to control the proceedings totally in their favour as they rolled the ball all over the territory with swift passes that kept Panchwadi almost stranded.
Panchwadi did produce some counter moves but the Salgaocar defence stood their grounds well.
As the match progressed, Sneco Dias scored a beautiful goal for Salgaocar in the 60th minute to make it 4-0 in their favour and then Jason Barbosa slammed the ball to the far corner of the rival nets in the 82nd minute to make it a big score in favour of his team. [NT]
