Salgaocar wallop Goa Velha 6-1

Salgaocar Football Club thrashed Goa Velha Sports Club 6-1 as their youthful striker Godfrey Silva scored a hat-trick in their Kingfisher Professional Football League match at Nehru stadium, Fatorda, Margao on Thursday.

At half time, the teams were level 1-1 during which the proceedings were almost evenly balanced, though Salgaocar had the larger share of exchanges.
The goal scorers for Salgaocar were: Godfrey Silva who scored a hat-trick, finding the net in the 2nd, 49th and 70th minute of play; Quenion N Jacobos (47th minute), substitute Sandesh Gadkari (80th minute) and Shon Daniel Rooney (86th minute).
For Goa Velha the consolation goal came off Chatur Naik in the 30th minute.
Though there was some semblance of a fight in the first half of play, when Goa Velha matched Salgaocar, they caved in under sustained pressure in the second session.
Goa Velha had a couple of chances too, particularly in the second session of play but substitute Alber Gonsalves and Josuah Vaz who were well placed within the striking range could not deliver their shots accurately into the Salgaocar goal as the players shot wide of the target.
It was Salgaocar all the way in the second session and had they utilised all of the chances they had, the score line could have been much broader.
Salgaocar went into the lead in the very second minute of play when Brian Mascarenhas sent a nice cross to Godfrey Silva who had no difficulty at all to slot the ball home from close distance.
After some quick exchanges, Goa Velha came back very strongly for sometime so much so that they managed to find the equaliser.
Sidroy Afonso ran down the flank and after dodging two Salgaocar defenders, neatly passed the ball to Chatur Naik, who responded with a lofted shot to beat Salgaocar keeper Albeno Gomes.
Like in the first session, Salgaocar quickly scored within two minutes of play after resumption when Brian Mascarenhas sent a through pass to Quenon N Jacobs who blasted in. Thereafter, Goa Velha could not cope with a flurry of raids that Salgaocar brought in with some pace and then began the feast of goals all the time.
During this spell, Godfrey Silva scored two quick goals to complete his hat-trick and then Sandesh Gadkari and S D Rooney found the mark to make it a tennis score in favour of the Salgaocar team. [NT]
