Sardinha fooling Goans: Churchill

Lashing out at the South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha for his statement on Dabolim and Mopa airports, former PWD Minister Churchill Alemao on Sunday urged the MP to first obtain a written undertaking from the Union Civil Aviation Ministry that both the airports would co-exist.
“Sardinha is fooling the people of Goa. He does not realise that Dabolim still remains in control of the Navy and they have allotted certain slot for civilian operators. What will happen if the Navy after some years called for the shifting of the civilian operations from Dabolim to Mopa”, Alemao demanded to know.
He said all these doubts and apprehensions can be resolved if the Union Civil Aviation Ministry gives a written undertaking that civilian operations will continue from Dabolim in the future. “Though Parliament may have taken a decision in favour of Dabolim and Mopa, nothing stops successive governments from taking a decision to shut down civilian operations at Dabolim”, he asserted.
Alemao said the MPs from Karnataka had adopted a similar stand that both airports in Bangalore would continue to serve the state, but sadly, one of them stands closed today.
Replying to a question, Alemao said he is not criticising Sardinha or has raked up the airport issue with an eye on the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, but is only sounding a note of caution to the MPs and Goa government that closure of Dabolim airport would adversely affect five lakh population inhabiting the coastal belt.
“I am a Congressman and will stake claim for the ticket for the South Goa Lok Sabha seat. I will take a decision at the right time if denied the ticket”, he asserted. [H]
