Savera wants no-detention clause revoked

Panjim: NGO Savera on Thursday wrote to the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) requesting that the no-detention clause in Right to Education (RTE) policy be revoked.Addressing the media, Savera President Tara Kerkar said, “I have written to MHRD as a fall out of the concerns raised by several parents with us during our interactions with them. RTE has certain loopholes which have started showing adverse results. The clause of no detention of student till standard eight which is replaced with Continuous Comprehensive Assessment is taking a toll on them and we have been witnessing drop outs in schools, especially when the child reaches standard nine.”“Though there are no formal figures of how many children drop out in the ninth due to no detention policy the number is sizeable,” Kerkar said. The NGO said there are instances of children getting into depression, drinking, smoking and even turning to abuse of narcotics which further leads to criminal activities as the confused child fails to grasp what is good and what is bad.[H]
