Scheme for seafarers notified

The government has issued a notification as regards the Goa Welfare/ Pension Scheme for Seafarers 2012, which provides financial assistance to the Goan seafarers.

The Commissioner for NRI Affairs, Goa, Dr Wilfred Mesquita told ‘The Navhind Times’ that the scheme provides a financial assistance in the form of gross pension of `2,500 per month to the retired Goan seamen, who were engaged in the lowly paid job/ jobs at sea, on completion of 60 years of age.
“This scheme fulfils the long pending demand of the Goan seafarers,” he added.
Speaking further, Dr Mesquita said that the scheme also includes Goan seamen, who are invalidated from sea service on medical grounds before retirement and widows of the deceased seamen on compassionate grounds, provided that the annual income from all sources does not exceed Rs 1.20 lakh.
The Commissioner for NRI Affairs, Goa also informed that the forms for the scheme are presently in the printing stage and would soon be made available to the desired persons.
As per the notification, the application received shall be scrutinised by the sanctioning authority appointed by the Commissioner, duly assisted by a three member team, on which the authorised representatives of the Seamen Association in Goa will be nominated, it was informed.
“We are already in touch with the association and have requested them to suggest name of their representative for appointment on the committee,” he added.
The beneficiaries of the scheme can be seamen like deck, engine and catering (saloon) ratings, besides utility hands and non-certified officers such as purser/ ship clerk, electrical officer and electronic officer.
Among others who are eligible for availing the scheme are petty officers like carpenter, chief steward, electrician, fitter, mechanist, pump man, refrigeration mechanic, computer operator, motor vehicle mechanic, automobile engineer, pipe fitter, diesel mechanic, general mechanic, maintenance mechanic, tool engineering mechanic, welder, electric arc welder, turner, boiler attendant, electronic mechanic and mechanician.
