Scooterist gets 30 days for drunken driving

Panaji: The Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Panaji has convicted and sentenced a rider to undergo simple imprisonment for a period of 30 days for riding the scooter without driving license and under influence of alcohol. The rider Abhijit Deka (27) was caught by the Panaji traffic police for riding scooter without wearing a helmet on December 18 at Dona Paula. He was also not having driving licence and was found to be riding under the influence of alcohol. The matter was subsequently submitted to the JMFC, Panaji. Since the accused was riding the scooter without driving license and under the influence of alcohol which is more than the permissible limit, accused is sentenced to undergo simple imprisonment for a period of 30 days, the court said in the order. The rider was also fined Rs 2550.

According to the Panaji traffic police the accused is from Assam and presently working in Goa and residing at Siolim. The alcohol content of 117 mg/100 ml was detected in a test by a breath analyser, informed police adding that the permissible alcohol limit is 30 mg per 100 ml of blood.

“Deka was caught during a traffic enforcement drive in Dona Paula. The drive against drunken driving/riding as well as other traffic violations will continue”, said Panaji traffic cell in-charge PI Brendan De Souza. He has urged riders and drivers not to drink and drive/rider and follow the traffic rules. This year the Panaji traffic police have caught around 39 motorists for riding/driving under the influence of alcohol. [NT]
