Sesa FA (Juniors) thumped Vagator Parish Youth Sports Club 3-1 in a GFA Second Division football league match at Sangolda ground, Monday. Sesa led 1-0 at half time.
Sesa started off on an attacking note and could have surged ahead in the first minute after Vagator defender Sunny D’Souza’s poor clearance allowed Sesa’s Olvin Cardozo to sneak inside the box but the latter shot wide with only rival goalkeeper Soma Korgaonkar at his mercy.
Four minutes later, Olvin sent in a clever through ball to teammate Stephen Colaco but Vagator’s Maverick Almeida came up with a timely tackle to deny Stephen a clear shot at the goal.
Vagator survived the onslaught as Alexinho D’Souza’s close ranger was blocked by the rival custodian in the 11th minute.
At the other end, Vagator captain Ryan D’Souza was building up some promising moves in the midfield but his efforts went down the drain since he lacked support from his teammates.
Subsequently, Vagator’s first threat came in the 21st minute from a set-piece. Kalpesh Gadekar’s free-kick sailed over the rival defenders and found Sunny, who could not direct his close range header towards the goal. Then Rupesh Kotkar’s powerful half-volley sailed inches over the crossbar in the 26th minute.
Sesa enjoyed the lion’s share of ball possession but lacked sharpness upfront. Sesa captain Raju Haldankar’s long free-kick found Alexinho, but the latter’s rasping shot was blocked by Soma in the 30th minute.
However, five minutes later, Sesa broke the deadlock through Alexinho’s powerful header off a perfect cross from Delrick Gomes.
The opener came as a confidence booster for Sesa, who came close twice to double their lead. First, Jaison Vaz saw his close ranger blocked by Soma in the 38th minute, then, Faizal Bepari’s 30-yard strike hit the crosspiece in the next minute.
Just before the lemon break, Vagator had a chance to equalize but Kalpesh’s outside the box grounder went inches wide.
In the second session, Vagator tried hard to score the equalizer and leveled the scores in the 50th minute through a penalty after Ryan’s free-kick was handled by a Sesa player inside the box. Ryan sent Sesa goalkeeper Fayaz Shaikh the wrong way to convert from the spot.
Vagator’s joy was short-lived after Sesa scored their second in the 56th minute. Jaison sent in a defence splitting pass to Olvin, who slotted home with an adroit placement.
Ten minutes later, Olvin registered his brace after he scored off a pass from Stephen.
Subsequently, Ganesh Thakur’s chip over Soma hit the crossbar as Sesa dominated in the final quarter.
Sesa are now on 21 points after winning all their seven matches while Vagator have collected nine points from seven matches with the final round to be played. [H]
