Shiroda suicide: case registered against in-laws
Ponda Police has registered a case against the husband and in-laws of a woman who had ended her life at Shiroda barely four months after her marriage.
Ponda Deputy Collector and SDM Johnson Fernandes had conducted an investigation into the suicide and had concluded that Chaya Renukant Naik (37) from Aksanwada-Shiroda was mentally tortured by her in-laws, leading her to commit suicide. Incidentally, the SDM’s investigation had also revealed that Chaya Naik had availed of the Ladli Laxmi scheme and Rs 1 lakh had been deposited into her account by the department concerned.
Chaya Naik had reportedly withdrawn Rs 95, 500 and had paid 62,610 to a jeweller, who had made some gold ornaments for her wedding. The remaining amount was used to repay those who had advanced her money for her wedding expenses.
Acting on the deputy collector’s report, Ponda police has registered case against Renukant Naik, Ratnakar Naik and Niraja Ratnakar Naik under Section 306 of IPC (abetment to suicide).
It may be recalled that the body of Chhaya Naik was found hanging at her home in October and the brother of the deceased had suspected foul play. Ponda PSI Rahul Dhamsekar is investigating the case. [H]
