Shops outside GMC illegal, alleges Bambolim local

The Comunidade of Bambolim has illegally issued No Objection Certificates to individuals to set up shops outside the Goa Medical College complex, when the land has already been acquired from the comunidade, a gauncar from the village has alleged.

Leocadio Monteiro, who has been waging a lone battle against the illegal shops outside the GMC complex, has demanded that action be taken against officials who are involved in the fraud.

“ These shops are totally illegal.

They are sought to be legalised through the comunidade, giving them an NOC to construct and occupy their land. But when the land is no longer in the hands of the comunidade, how can they give an NOC,” Monteiro asked.

The government had acquired land from the Bambolim comunidade to build a hospital and today the land within the hospital and surrounding area belongs to the GMC.

Monteiro has also alleged that these shops and other constructions have been releasing sewage in the open.

The government had originally intended to transfer the shops in the space given within the underpass built by the GSIDC. But that has not happened yet. Another reason for the continuation of shops is the absence of canteens within the GMC that have not been tendered, which is leading the people to patronise the shops for their needs.
