Siolim Sodiem outplayed Milagres Sports Club, Mapusa 5-1 in a GFA Second Division football league match at Sangolda ground, Thursday. Siolim led 4-1 at half time.
Siolim started strongly with a 4-4-2 formation and almost took the lead in the fourth minute but Gopal Shirodkar muffed a sitter and shot wide with only Milagres goalkeeper Manuel Viegas at his mercy.Siolim surged ahead after Milagres goalkeeper Manuel fumbled with the collection of Rashiketh Salgaokar’s dangerous cross from the right flank and the ball eventually rolled into the nylons in the ninth minute.
Four minutes later, Shikhar Shirodkar set up his Siolim teammate Rupesh Madkar who cleverly chipped the ball over the onrushing Manuel to double the lead.
At the other end, Milagres tried to get back into the game but Vijet Salgaokar’s rasping shot was blocked by rival custodian Kewan D’ Souza in the 20th minute.
Siolim continued to play good short passes as Rupesh squeezed through the Milagres defence in the 35th minute to complete his brace.Mahendra Harmalkar inflated Siolim’s lead in the 45th minute with an adroit placement.
However, in the next minute, Avito Fernandes pulled one back for Milagres when he slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a neat placement.
After the restart, Siolim enjoyed the lion’s share of ball possession as Rupesh scored his third goal in the 78th minute.
Our Margao correspondent adds: Raia Sporting Club survived a spirited fight back to score a narrow 2-1 win over Maina Sports Club in their opening Salcete Zone GFA Second Division League football tournament at panchayat ground, Raia, Thursday. The score was 1-1 at half time.
Raia took control of the match early on and nearly took the lead but Navin Pereira spurned the easiest chance of the match off a well measured cross from Silvano Reveredo.
Raia took the lead in the 29th minute through Xellies Gracias who volleyed home from inside the box off a pass from midfielder Vishnu Singh. However, their joy was shortlived in the 32nd minute when striker Shamba Khutkor bulged the net for Maina off a pass from Alvito Colaco to put his team on equal terms.
The equalizer galvanized Maina and enjoyed the lion’s share of ball possession.
After resumption, Maina put up a better display and nearly scored but midfielder Venson Figueiredo’s rasping shot was well blocked by the Raia goalkeeper.
After the scare, Raia showed more urgency in their approach and nearly made it 2-1 soon but rival defender Andrew Colaco effected a goal line save after rival goalkeeper Andrey Fernandes was beaten off a Janiar Clemente goal bound cross. Ten minutes later, Maina suffered a huge jolt when goalkeeper Andrey was injured and was replaced by the substitute goalkeeper.
Midway in the second half, Raia had a golden opportunity to wrap up the match but Addison Oliveira was the worst culprit as he shot wide from hand shaking distance off a Silvano pass.
Raia’s match-winner came in the 84th minute when substitute Rego Baretto found midfielder Jandar Clemente free on the right flank and the later punished the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot.
Stung by the setback, Maina regrouped quickly and took the fight to the rival camp and nearly found the equalizer but striker Shamba Khutor failed to convert an opportunity after the rival goalkeeper misjudged the flight of the ball off a flag kick taken by Domingos Rebello.
With this win, Raia collected three points from one match while Maina suffered their first loss.
