SIT on police-drug mafia nexus likely to call for inquiry records

Panjim: The Special Investigation Team (SIT), recently constituted to probe the 2013 House Committee report on police-drug mafia nexus, is likely to call for records of inquiry. The House Committee was headed by former MLA Francisco (Mickky) Pacheco.
“We will call for the records after which further course of action will follow. As of now, we are awaiting for an official communiqué on the formation of the SIT to investigate this case,” an officer told Herald. The officer did not rule out the possibility of summoning individuals named in the report. Pacheco could also be called to record his statement as a witness. After a lull of nearly four years, when the House Committee report exposed the politicians-police-drug mafia nexus, the State government last year decided to accept the findings by setting up the SIT under Crime Branch. The team headed by DySP Edwin Colaco, comprises PI Uday Naik, PSI Jaques Sheriff, Head Constables Carlos Pontes and Ashok Gaude, and constables Ishwar Kaskar, Vinayak Sawant and Kalpaesh Toraskar.
The Committee had indicted the former Director General of Police Kishen Kumar, former Home Minister and sitting MLA Ravi Naik’s son Roy Naik, and recommended filing of FIR against both.
The report had alleged that Naik failed to act against the drug trade and drug mafia and recommended that a motion be passed expelling him from the membership of the House from the date he assumed office as Home Minister. The report also recommended that salaries and allowances drawn by him as minister be recovered. The committee also recommended action against former Anti-Narcotics Cell SP Veenu Bansal, ex-SP Mangaldas Desai, three Police Inspectors and others, including a panch witness. The committee had faced allegations of vengeance due to political rivalry as two members Vishnu Wagh (former BJP MLA) and Michael Lobo (BJP MLA) did not endorse it, while committee chairman, Lavu Mamledar and Caetano (Caitu) Silva adopted the report.
