SLPs against Deshprabhu’s bail dismissed

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Special Leave Petitions filed by local activists seeking cancellation of bail to Congress leader Jeetendra Desprabhu and his associate Geetesh Naik in the alleged illegal mining case.
The order was passed by a bench comprising of Justices H L Dattu and Chandramauli K R Prasad on petitions by Kashinath Shetye and other activists.
Shetye had challenged the Sessions Court order granting bail to Naik which was later upheld by the High Court. Another petition was filed contesting Desprabhu’s bail.
The High Court had earlier refused to interfere in the order passed by the Session Court granting bail to Naik and also rejected the request for intervention of Shetye in bail application.
Being aggrieved by the order of the High Court, Shetye had moved the Supreme Court that issued notices to the respondents. Both were arrested by the Crime Branch pursuant to the FIR lodged by the activists alleging illegal extraction of ore and causing huge losses to state exchequer worth crores of rupees. [H]
