Sodiem-Siolim panch shot at
A panch of the Sodiem-Siolim village panchayat, Mr Amey Harmalkar (23) was shot at with a country pistol by two youths from Camurlim in the wee hours of Monday.
According to the Mapusa police, Mr Harmalkar was sitting with his friend Mr Sachin Hirawale at Camurlim near a restaurant at about 12:45 a.m. on Monday when the accused Tukaram Khorjuvenkar and Sachin Korgaonkar, both residents of Camurlim who were passing by on a motorcycle allegedly upon seeing the panch abused him. Annoyed with the insult the duo chased Khorjuvenkar and Korgaonkar on their motorcycle. The two groups confronted each other and a heated argument followed at the Sateri Garage.
At this juncture Tukaram shot Mr Harmalkar in the hand and abdomen. The panch, who sustained injured, was first rushed to a private hospital then to the district hospital, which referred him to the GMC, where his condition is said to be stable.
The police said that both the accused were arrested and remanded to 10 days police custody, adding that they were verifying whether there had been a licence for the pistol. Mr Harmalkar is the panch of ward 6 of the Sodiem-Siolim village panchayat.
Though the police are still investigating the reasons behind the attack, sources in the village alleged that the panch was involved in some property dealings and probably this attack could be a fallout of a property dispute.
The police have registered an offence under section 357 and 25 and 27 of the Arms Act. [NT]
