Speeding police van knocks down father, daughter
A speeding police van knocked down a father and daughter who were on a scooter, near Panjim Church Square during Wednesday morning school rush hour. The home guard who was driving the van has not been arrested by the police, even as scooterist Ulhas Desai has slipped into a coma while the daughter escaped with minor injuries.
"The accident occurred at the Altinho – Church square junction, when Desai, 51, on his Dio-scooter was enroute to a higher secondary school near Mahalaxmi temple, to drop his 17-year-old daughter for Class XII examination.
Police driver Sandeep Parab was reportedly driving the van bearing registration number GA-01-G-2054. “The van was fast,” a local said. Ulhas who is an ECG technician at Goa Medical College, has been hospitalized and is reported to have sustained multiple head injury and bleeding.
The police meanwhile have not booked their driver, except for registering a case of ‘accident’. It remains to be verified whether the home guard was appointed as a driver or was just doing chores for someone else, as reported by Herald earlier.
“We are yet to record the statements of the victims,” a police official said by way of excuse for not arresting the police driver. [H]
