Sporting deflate 10-man Salgaocar
Second half goals from their foreign recruits gave Sporting Clube de Goa a 2-0 win over a 10-man Salgaocar Football Club in their round 18 match of the I-League at Duler Stadium on Monday. Sporting’s new Spanish midfielder Angel Berlanga scored in his debut match for the Flaming Oranje and playmaker Ogba Kalu Nnanna added the second. The win helped Sporting leapfrog several teams in the league standings and move outside the relegation zone while Salgaocar, after their stunning win over Mohun Bagan in the previous clash, are now again threatened by relegation. Sporting are now ninth with 17 points from as many matches while Salgaocar slipped to 12th, staying on 14 from 17.
Both the teams came into the match without many changes in their line-up. Salgaocar’s dependable stopper back Luciano Sobrosa started from the bench after having recovered from a brief injury spell while Samananda Singh and Rowllin Borges made it to the starting eleven for Sporting. The first session saw some early attacks at both ends with Salgaocar squandering most of their opportunities. Later on, play was largely restricted to the midfield with both sides cutting each other on the attacks. [NT]
