Sports department to dismantle Rs 1.5 crore project in coastal regulatory zone
The sports department will have to pay for its mistake of illegally constructing a compound wall and drainage system in a CRZ area at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore for a playground at Non Mon, Vasco.
The government counsel gave this assurance before the national green tribunal's (NGT) principal bench, New Delhi, headed by Justice V R Kingaonkar, that the respondent no 2, sports department would dismantle all the structures of the compound wall/walls of the drainage and also remove the debris and construction material at its own cost.
A Vasco-based NGO, Savera, had filed an application before NGT, alleging that the filling up of the low-lying paddy field, barely 10m from high tide line of Arabian Sea/river front, would destroy the catchment area and have serious environmental consequences.
The applicant, Tara Kerkar of Savera, had alleged in her petition filed on February, 2012, that the compound wall and drainage system was built without any construction licence from Mormugao municipal council. The sports department had been issued approval by Goa coastal zone management authority (GCZMA) on April 8, 2008, only for acquisition of the land, she had alleged.[TOI]
