St Savio’s go down to Raia Sporting


 St Savio’s Sports Club, Calangute went down fighting by a solitary goal to Raia Sporting Club in the Candolim Panchayat Soccer Cup at Dr Gustavo Monteiro stadium, Candolim grounds, on Thursday.
It was St Savio’s strikers who had no luck to score and it was also for some brilliant goalkeeping by Raia veteran keeper Cosme Oliveira, who time and again came to his team’s rescue. In the very 3rd minute of play he blocked Sherwin Lobo’s power-packed shot from inside the penalty box.
In the 27th and 29th minute he fisted Christon Fernandes’ fierce header for a corner and then came with a full stretched diving save to collect Blake Halankar scorching right footer. Two minutes into the second session and Raia had one good look at the rival goal and they scored through Felix D’Mello, whose stinging shot from outside the penalty box beat Calangute keeper Rolex Rebello hands down.
Calangute went all out in search of the equaliser, but Raia’s last line of defence along with the keeper held to the one- goal lead till the final hooter. [NT]
