Panaji: The state cabinet is likely to take a decision on Wednesday on reducing certain fines related to traffic rule violations before implementing the amended Motor Vehicle Act in the state from January 1, 2020.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho said that he has proposed to reduce certain fines related to traffic violations. He said that the cabinet will take a related decision on Wednesday.
Stating that the Goa government wants to implement the amended Motor Vehicle Act from January 1, 2020, Godinho said that the cabinet will take a final decision on reducing certain fines.
“We have decided to follow the Gujarat government wherein certain fines for traffic rule violation have been reduced while implementing the amended Act. I have proposed to reduce certain fines on the lines of Gujarat,” he said, adding that there are certain fines like in the case of drunk driving which cannot be reduced by the state government and the Goa government will not interfere with these fines.
Most of the states have implemented the amended Motor Vehicle Act wherein fines have been increased for traffic rule violations from September 2019. However, the Goa government delayed the implementation citing reason of bad roads in the state. [NT]
