State files affidavit in SC on mining

The state government on Saturday filed the much-awaited affidavit in the illegal mining case before the Supreme Court seeking an early resumption of iron ore mining in Goa.

The director of mines and geology, Mr Prasanna Acharya confirmed that the affidavit has been filed in the apex court on Saturday morning as next date for hearing is scheduled on February 15, 2013.

Mr Acharya refused to divulged contents of the affidavit. But earlier, the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar had informed that the affidavit would highlight socio-economic impact on mining-dependent people in the state if mining continues to be banned for longer period.

Sources in the mining department informed that the affidavit has challenged some of the findings of the Justice Shah Commission report on the ground that the panel had relied on data provided by the mining department when it had been in mess during the tenure of previous government. [NT]
