Takes potshots at Sardinha over Mopa airport

Former PWD minister, Mr Churchill Alemao on Wednesday assured to lend support to any movement in Goa that was in favour of retaining the Dabolim airport “as two airports in the state were not feasible.

Addressing the media, Mr Alemao took potshots at the South Goa MP, Mr Francisco Sardinha alleging that the latter was attempting to mislead the people by telling fairytales. “I read media reports about his (Sardinha’s) statements that two airports can function in the state, and that, this was given in writing by the concerned authorities.  Sardinha is misleading the people. He is the MP who brought the Mopa airport project to Goa that is why he is making such statements,” Mr Alemao alleged.
Mr Alemao further said that nowhere in the country two airports are operation in a single state. “He (Sardinha) has the habit of fooling the people with his irresponsible statements. He is the same MP who promised to  legalise dhirio (bull fight) in Goa, but all his promises have remained only on papers,” he added.
The former minister said that if the Mopa airport is constructed the Navy could stop landing of civilian flights at Dabolim airport without any notice and if this happens the people of coastal areas of South Goa will be the most affected.
Mr Alemao urged the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar to rethink before going ahead with the Mopa airport project in the larger interest of the people of South Goa as Dabolim airport, he said, is centrally located and its closure would create mass unemployment.
When media persons recalled that the Anjediva island was given back to the Navy during the Congress rule, Mr Alemao accepted that it was their mistake and that such a mistake should not be repeated.   [NT]
