Goa Carbon Ltd Goodwill Ambassador and Woman Grandmaster Bhakti Kulkarni added another feather in her illustrious cap when she helped Air India Team regain the National Team Chess Championship at Hyderabad, Tuesday.
Besides the team gold Bhakti was awarded bronze medal for her individual performance on second board for her team.
Bhakti said that she was very happy to be a major contributor in her team’s success. After her gold medal winning performance in the last Commonwealth Championship, Bhakti was asked to play on higher board ahead of senior players. The Goan lass responded by outwitting national Women’s Champion Mary Ann Gomes in their crucial match with top-seeded Airport Authority of India.
Bhakti followed this win by drawing with former National Women’s Champion Nisha Mohota, who was representing defending champions Petroleum Board.
Bhakti said from Hyderabad that it was a novel experience for her while playing for a team of stalwarts.
“When I beat Mary, my team-mate Tania Sachdev could not control herself and hugged me,” said the Goan star.
“This was best the accolade I got an appreciation from a player who had won the country’s highest award the Arjuna Award in chess.”
Bhakti will devote one full month to her academics now before participating in Bangkok Chess Club International Open in Thailand in April. [NT]
