Tension prevails at Chinchinim

Agitated residents of Dandeavaddo-Chinchinim served a 24-hour deadline on the Cuncolim police to act on a complaint of alleged prostitution in an apartment in the locality.
They demanded that the woman putting up at the apartment should be immediately asked to vacate the premises or face the wrath of the women.
Margao Sub-Divisional Police Officer, DySP Mohan Naik, who rushed to the spot, has called a meeting between the residents and the flat owner in his office on Monday. DySP Naik said the Cuncolim police have been directed to verify the antecedents of the woman putting up in the apartment following allegations made by the local residents. Velim MLA Benjamin D’Silva also visited the locality to take stock of the situation.
Tension rent the air on Sunday evening after agitated residents questioned the Cuncolim police for ignoring the complaint made against the flat owner for leasing the premises to the woman. They pointed out that instead of initiating action against the flat owner and stopping the activity, the police registered a case against the local resident, Savio Lopes based on a complaint from the flat owner.
Angry over the police inaction, the residents gheraoed the police, demanding explanation over cold shouldering their complaint. Tension mounted after a police sub-inspector clicked photographs of the residents trying to block the police jeep and they demanded that the police officer delete the photographs.
A local resident Olavo told newsmen that the police should initiate action against the woman putting up in the rented flat. “We want the women to vacate the premises immediately. The name of the locality is getting tarnished. The apartment is close to our Chapel. We want peace in our locality”, he said, while questioning the Cuncolim police decision to register a case of assault against the local residents based on a complaint lodged by the flat owner instead of acting on their complaint to stop the activity in the apartment.
Local women warned that they will not remain silent spectators if the police fail to initiate action within 24 hours. “We demand that the women be vacated from the apartment immediately”, they demanded, while demanding apology from the flat owner fro registering a case against Savio Lopes for assault.
