There is community transmission: HM

Panjim: After Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s U-turn on community transmission of COVID-19, Health Minister Viswajit Rane confirmed that it is happening in the State.

“With movement (of people) from one place to another, community transmission occurs and in Goa, there is community transmission due to the movement,” Rane said during an interaction with a local news channel.

Last month, Sawant had admitted to the beginning of community transmission in Goa but days later he retracted the statement. Briefing the media earlier this month, the CM clarified, “I realised that the roots of all the positive cases in Goa are connected, which means there is no community transmission, the virus is not in the air.”

Rane also said that Mangor Hill, Goa’s first containment zone, was a learning experience for the health authorities. Several cases from Mangor Hill and those linked to this zone are being reported every week.

The Health Minister also reiterated that Goa cannot be insulated from the rest of the States while replying to a query on increasing cases in the last few weeks. He also downplayed claims that a lockdown would be a solution to curb rise in COVID-19 cases. “Lockdown is not the answer to fight COVID-19 in Goa. Unless it is like Mangor area which was declared containment zone but in such cases, what we can do it declare the area a containment zone and conduct mass testing. This is the way forward,” he said.

The minister further said he will put forth a proposal in the upcoming cabinet meeting for 50 AYUSH doctors and 50 nurses for the COVID-19 hospital, while extending support to Kerala model for testing and containment strategies. [H]
