Thousands witness Margao Carnival parade amidst fun and frolic
Ministers, MLAs, South Goa MP and MMC councillors cutting across party lines and dressed in colourful attires joined hands and danced to the tunes of Brazilian Ramba-Samba for almost 30 minutes in front of the municipal building after the King Momo declared the decree of three-day Carnival festivities in Margao on Sunday.
Thousands of Carnival revelers, who flooded onto the nearly three-km float parade route at Margao happily went home not before watching various floats which also send important messages including ‘stop abusing girl child, they are the light and flowers of future’; ‘protect nature, save trees’; ‘preserve communal harmony’; ‘protect khazan lands’; ‘hang the culprit, protect the girl child’ etc, besides depicting Goan traditions like maram, kharvi, kunbi, poder, tevoi etc.
The Minister for Tourism, Mr Dilip Parulekar and Fisheries Minister, Mr Avertano Furtado, MLA, Mr Rajan Naik, and MP, Mr Francisco Sardinha flagged off the Carnival float parade. They later marched upto the Municipal square and as the music played, they could not resist the temptation of dancing. Even lady councillors joined in and danced along with two Brazilians girls. Interestingly, the Margao MLA and the former chief minister, Mr Digambar Kamat wasn’t present.
Floats were seen in different categories. Right from the junk cars to the motorbike company sponsored promotional floats to the traditional and clown categorised floats, they brought a festive look to the city. The towers erected for the policemen to monitor the floats were also partially occupied by revelers. Police had to cordon off the areas near the stage as Carnival revelers preferred to rush at the spot for better viewing. [NT]
