Three monuments left out, heritage lovers miffed
Heritage lovers are upset over the non-inclusion of three monuments, including a megalithic site in Chicalim, though state archives and archaeology department had announced plans to do so more than three years back.
"The three monuments were to be added to the list of 51 monuments maintained by the department," Prajal Sakhardande, chairman of Goa heritage action group (GHAG) said. Heritage lovers said the notification has not been issued despite repeated pleas to extend protection to the sites.
The proposed addition to the list of state protected monuments came after 10 monuments had been incorporated in it on October 16, 2003. The three monuments are the Chicalim caves, actually believed to be 2nd century burial chambers, the 17th century Maruti temple in Advalpal and a Parshuram temple of the same period. "The department is sitting on the old list, though there are a large number of sites," the GHAG chairman said. An official from the state archives and archaeology department said the government had not approved the proposal. "It has not been rejected, but kept in abeyance," the source said. The land available around the Chicalim cave is considered insufficient for its protection. [H]
