Tight security for Narkasur effigy contests in Margao

The Superintendent of Police, South Goa, Mr Shekhar Prabhudessai, on Sunday, informed that over 150 policemen including IRB and Central Para Military Force personnel will be deployed in various parts of Margao for Narkasur effigy competitions to be held on the eve of Diwali on Monday.

Mr Prabhudessai said that he held the meeting with all the officers and plan has been prepared by the Margao town police for the security arrangement.
He said that IRB, local policemen and para military force will be posted on duty, adding steps have been taken to avoid any untoward incident in the town.
He also said that similar plans for bandobast have been formulated for Vasco, Canacona and Quepem.
It is learnt that the district authorities have given nod for holding  Narkasur competition in the heart of the town by bringing the entire route under police security against the backdrop of bomb blast that took place on the eve of Diwali in the year 2009.
Meanwhile, hectic preparations are on in Margao and its close by areas for Diwali. With hardly a day left for the onset of the festival of lights, children and youth were seen giving final touches to the effigies of Narkasur. These effigies will be burnt during the wee hours of Diwali.  In Margao and Fatorda, several Narkasur effigy competitions have been organised on the eve of Diwali.
Mr Nitin Naik from Aquem said that his group has prepared small and big effigies of Narkasur and added that the group has put in lot of efforts to make these effigies.
Mr Naik said that some time they participate in the competition held in Margao and other places. [NT]
