A tourist from Uttar Pradesh was rescued by lifeguards off the Candolim beach on Monday afternoon.
According to Drishti, Zahir Alam, 25, was swimming in a non-swim zone at around 1.25pm in front of the Candolim lifeguard tower when he got caught in a rip current and started gesturing for help.
Noticing him in distress, lifeguards rushed to his assistance and brought him to the shore.
He was then given oxygen and rushed to the Candolim primary health centre (PHC) for further treatment.
He was later allowed to go after he recovered.
In another incident on Sunday, a tourist from Madhya Pradesh, Punkaj Sharma, 25, was swimming along with four others in a non-swim zone despite being advised not to do so. Sharma suddenly got caught in a lateral current, but was rescued by lifeguards brought him to the shore using their equipment and gave him oxygen.
He was then taken to the Candolim PHC for further treatment and kept under observation for some time.
One held for assaulting Brit, 3 others: The Porvorim police on Monday arrested the main accused, Satish Naik of Britona, for allegedly assaulting a British woman, two security guards and a local resident at Verem on Sunday.
A British national, who was walking with a dog, was allegedly assaulted on Sunday at Verem beach. The three persons who tried to help her were also assaulted by a group of around seven people.
American man dies in mishap at Paliem
A tourist from America, Stephen Scaffer, died after a motorbike allegedly dashed against his two-wheeler on the Arambol to Keri road late Saturday night.
The police said that the incident took place at about 11.25pm on Saturday when an unidentified person while proceeding from Arambol to Keri on a motorbike collided with Scaffer's two-wheeler at Mirzalwada in Paliem.
The American tourist suffered severe injuries, while the rider of the motorbike fled from the scene.
A villager then took the wounded tourist in his jeep to the private hospital in Mapusa, where the victim succumbed to his injuries on Sunday. PSI Vijay Chodankar of the Pernem police is further investigating the case. [TOI]
