Traffic Police claim zero drunk driving cases around New Year
Traffic Police Department has said there were no drunken driving related accidents on New Year’s Eve and January 1, 2013, claiming success in their battle against a menace which has perennially soured beginning of the New Year.
Traffic SP Vishram Borkar said no case of drunk driving was reported during these two days. This despite several thousands of vehicles surging into the State from neighbouring States.
Incidentally, this year’s 24th National Road Safety Week theme is “Stay Alive, Don’t Drink & Drive”.
However, about 15 vehicular accidents were reported around the New Year and it is being ascertained whether the cause of the accidents was drunk driving. The 2012 New Year’s eve, drunk driving accidents claimed four lives and 13 serious accident cases were attended to by GMC doctors.
This time, the department ensured heavy deployment of traffic personnel primarily along the coastal belt to regulate traffic and book offenders.
During its ongoing Road Safety Week, Traffic Police has undertaken various activities for spreading awareness amongst all road users including pedestrians and students. Its officers will be conducting various traffic education programmes all over Goa covering targeting various other groups. [H]
