Tragedy strikes family picnic, 2 brothers drown
A family picnic turned tragic when two brothers died, while two others were rescued at Rajbagh beach, near Cabo-de-Rama fort, at Khola-Canacona on Sunday evening.
Cuncolim police reported Krishna Subhash Salelkar (36) died, while his younger brother, Paresh (21), who was lifted by a Coast Guard helicopter to a hospital for treatment was later pronounced dead.
Cuncolim Police Inspector Raju Raut Dessai later confirmed the death of the siblings Paresh, who had shown signs of life, after he was rescued from the sea by Coast guard personnel, was shifted to a hospital at Chicalim in the same chopper he was earlier rescued in.
Sources say the brothers, residents of nearby Gowal-Khola, along with others had gone for a family picnic at Rajbag beach. At about 3 pm, they went to swim, when they suddenly began to struggle in the choppy waters at about 3 pm.
Some other people, who were also present on the beach, called for help. A local, Durgesh, rushed to the scene and rescued Kamlesh and Chandresh Vaiz, but was unable to reach out to Krishna and Paresh.
Both brothers were found lifeless. After administering
first aid, Paresh showed some signs of life and was taken to Chicalim hospital in the Coast Guard helicopter, on request from the locals. Cuncolim police have sent the bodies to Hospicio in Margao for preservation and post-mortem.
Krishna is survived by his wife and two children.
Quepem legislator Chandrakant Kavelekar and Khola Zilla Panchayat member Krishna Velip rushed to the site to take stock of the situation. [H]
