Trawler owners to meet Pawar today over diesel price hike
A five-member delegation of the various fishing trawler owners’ associations in Goa, left for Delhi on Monday to meet the Union Minister for Agriculture, Mr Sharad Pawar on Tuesday over the hike in diesel prices. The purpose of their meet is to demand that the price of diesel be brought down and that they be included in the agriculture category instead of the commercial category to which they have been recently shifted by the government of India.
Speaking to ‘The Navhind Times,’ Mr Edwin Carvalho, president, Vasco Trawler Owners Association, said that the strike by the trawler owners from January 29 onwards is to protest against the trawlers being included as bulk consumers of diesel by the Ministry of Petroleum. This inclusion, he said, was because each trawler association purchased diesel in tankers directly from the oil companies and then distributed it to their members through the pump outlets located at the jetties.
