Tripurari Poornima held at Sanquelim
Tripurari Poornima, a festival of light and lamps marking the end of the Diwali festival, was held at Vithal Temple at Sanquelim on Wednesday.
Hundreds of people visited the place to witness unique boat competition that is organised annually.
The annual festival at the Vithal Temple was organised by the Vithalapur Deepawali Utsav Samiti in association with the Department of Art & Culture, Information and Publicity Department, Goa Tourism Development Corporation and the Goa tourism Department.
Tripurari Poornima is the full-moon day in the Kartik month in the traditional Hindu calendar. The day celebrates the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon Tripurasura and destruction of the three cities – Tripuri – made by demons.
The festivities of Diwali conclude on Tripurari Poornima and since last several years the festival at Sanquelim has gained importance at the State level due to the boat competition.
On Wednesday, the festival began with the procession of Shrikrishina in palanquin followed by cultural programmes and folk dances by a group from Sarvan. Deep Daan programme was later held in Walwanti River.
The concluding function will be held at 12.30 am in the presence of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, Art and Culture Minister Dayanand Mandrekar, Deputy Speaker Anant Shet, Opposition Leader Pratapsing Rane and North Goa MP Shirpad Naik. [H]
